Beginning Your Literature Search

Searching for appropriate sources to meet the goals of your literature search requires a search strategy. Once your PICO question is established, follow the steps below to develop your search strategy.

Steps:

  1. EXAMPLE QUESTION: In adults with recurrent furunculosis, do prophylactic antibiotics, compared to no treatment, reduce the recurrence rate?
  2. LIST RELEVANT KEYWORDS: furunculosis, adults, antibiotics, treatment, recurrence
  3. ORGANIZE search terms strategically, considering synonyms or related terms:

When combing keywords, think about the relationships between concepts, and combine them in different ways using AND, OR, NOT.

AND combines search terms; OR searches for terms interchangeably; NOT excludes search terms.

Furunculosis AND treatment AND recurrence
Furunculosis AND (treatment OR antibiotics)
Furunculosis AND antibiotics AND recurrence
Furunculosis AND (antibiotics OR  prophylactic) AND adults
(Furunculosis OR "recurrent boils" OR "skin abscesses") AND antibiotics NOT children
Furunculosis AND efficacy AND antibiotic
